Installation of a new double-wall fibreglass tank system following removal of an old corroded steel tank and cleanup of contaminated soil.Leakage of hazardous products from underground and above-ground storage tanks can contribute significantly to soil and groundwater contamination, particularly when the discharge has remained unnoticed over an extended period of time.  Environmental concern is thus focused primarily on underground tanks, in this regard, although the various applicable items of legislation and regulations also apply to aboveground tanks and other classes of containers.  In recognition of the significant number of leaking tanks in Ontario, regulations enacted under the Technical Standards and Safety Act have been promulgated and include the Liquid Fuels regulation and the Fuel Oil regulation.  Both regulations have adopted Codes which govern the installation, use and decommissioning of above- and below-ground storage tanks.  Copies of the Act and regulations can be obtained at the TSSA web site.

The Federal Government is also proposing new regulations for storage tanks. Information on the proposed regulations can be found at the Environment Canada Web Site.
