| Industrial
wastewater can enter the environment a number of ways including
direct discharges to waterways, indirect discharge via municipal
sewer systems, and discharge through precipitation
runoff from a contaminated site into storm sewers, open ditches
and groundwater regime. These industrial wastewater discharges may
contravene municipal by-laws, the Ontario Environmental
Protection Act and
the Ontario Water Resources
Act. The discharge
of contaminants via these routes can be controlled through in-plant
modifications, effluent pre-treatment and site management.
In
addition to surface water treatment DCS applies its knowledge of
treatment systems to the treatment of contaminated groundwater.
Following completion of hydrogeological studies the appropriate
treatment technology is chosen and integrated into a treatment program.
The program is designed to permit discharge of treated water
to a plant treatment system or to the municipal sewer system.
DCS
provides a full range of services for the investigation and treatment
of both surface and groundwater regimes. These services
include:
- flow
measurement and sampling;
- preparation
of Site Best Management Plans;
- regulatory
approvals;
- sewer-use
compliance investigations;
- in-plant
waste treatment;
- treatment
technology assessment;
- surface
water discharge studies;
- storm
water quality and quantity discharge management; and
- contaminated
groundwater recovery and treatment.
